We had the good fortune of connecting with Alicia Colella and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alicia, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
“Crafting a Timeless Legacy Through Art”
Art is meant to be shared. It is a means of expression by the artist to touch a person and evoke emotions. God blesses each one of us with skills and talents. His beautiful creation arouses the passion of the artist to capture a sliver of the beauty around us using His inspiration and our hands. I honor God’s gifts by sharing them with the world to make a positive impact.
I am a self-taught artist, on a journey for the last 12 years. I always had creativity, but never had time to explore it. Being married, working and being blessed with 3 children time flew by. My family is my biggest joy and they are my why and purpose in life. But I found myself meditating about my contribution to the world beyond my family. Life is filled with fleeting moments. After many years of prayer, and despite the hectic but rewarding life, I began exploring my creativity in art. I became overwhelmed by the beauty around me, of simple moments in time such as a sunrise, the wonderful beauty of the seaside and captivating landscapes. I also noticed the style and elegance of the details in the impressive architecture around me.
I created a collection of pen and ink architectural renditions. The result surprised my family, and myself, that my children suggested I share my art with others. The positive reception from people took momentum, and little did I know, I had become an artist whose work was getting admiration. It is rewarding and inspiring to witness positive and happy reactions from people who appreciate what I create, and I am in grateful.
With my pen and ink designs, I aspire to capture a sense of balance and symmetry. Using acrylics to paint I create moods that evoke emotions of joy, inspiration, and peace with playful, bright and soft color palates.
I want to leave a legacy of work that connects a community & celebrates the power of art to inspire, please & provoke thought. My contribution to the world is an expression of visual joy. I want my art journey to be a testament to the profound impact art can have on an individual’s life. I want my children to move my work forward through the generations and hopefully my artwork blesses them with its rewards as much as it has blessed me. I want to leave a legacy that will continue to touch the hearts & lives of my family and inspire countless others. A reminder that art is not only a means of self-expression but also a powerful tool for connecting with humanity on a deeper, more meaningful level. A humbling thought that the enduring power of creativity has the potential to shape our world for generations to come, transcending language & cultural barriers, by unifying the human experience with positive emotions.

A glimpse into my journey: I’m a self-taught artist hailing from the vibrant city of Puebla, Mexico, now nestled in the enchanting and welcoming city of Charleston, SC. My artistic illustrations comes to life through the dance of pen and ink, as well as the vivid strokes of acrylics. The essence of my creations is inspired by Charleston’s breathtaking landscapes, the gentle seduction of the Lowcountry, and the timeless Southern Charm that graces this city.
In my childhood, the margins of my notebooks were my canvas, where doodles and drawings took flight. I was captivated by the elegant architecture that adorned my hometown. The transition to Charleston was a step into a familiar dream; its architectural intricacies felt like old friends. It was in this serendipitous meeting of worlds that I discovered my artistic calling.
Seeking solace and purpose beyond the rigors of my role as an accountant and the whirlwind of family life, I picked up my sketchbook. And just like that, my art journey unfolded.
Since 2010, I’ve been on a journey of crafting intricate hand-drawn renditions of Charleston’s iconic gates. A few years back, my desire to wield the paintbrush led me to the world of acrylics, where landscapes became my muse. This artistic odyssey evolved from self-discovery, moments of quiet prayer, and the wide-eyed wonder of a child, allowing me to perceive the world through myriad lenses. My aim is to encapsulate a harmonious blend of balance and symmetry. The stark interplay of black and white, coupled with the bold strokes of architectural lines, resonate deeply with me. Through acrylics, I envision moods that elicit emotions of joy, inspiration, and tranquility, employing a palette that dances between playful, vibrant, and soothing hues. My style leans towards impressionism, wherein I seek to encapsulate the captivating beauty that surrounds me.
Every artist is unique, a testament to our individuality. No two strokes of paint or ink are ever alike. In my creative realm, I draw upon distinct inspirations and emotions, shaped by my rich heritage from Mexico and Spain. This heritage shapes how I perceive and harmonize colors, achieving a delightful equilibrium. What sets me apart is the journey of self-teaching, of learning, discovering, and refining a skill that’s truly my own. I paint with the freedom to express what moves me or to capture the intricacies that hold personal significance.
I am proud of the humble journey and accomplishments along the way. I have been juried in to exhibit with:
The Charleston Artist Guild.
Piccolo Spoleto 2022, City Gallery in Charleston
The Town Hall Art Exhibit Program in Mount Pleasant
Featured in the South Carolina Voyager magazine
Interviewed by the Informador – Charleston Spanish newspaper
Commissioned for artwork for projects by Drayton Hall, The Citadel, Collaborate with The Gibbes Museum of Art, among private labels designs.
It has been challenging because I juggle a career in Accounting, Family life and my art business. But through the thick and thin I am proud of successfully balancing the many aspects of my life and art business. I am also pleased and excited to develop products stemming from my artwork.
I find boundless excitement and genuine joy in crafting expansive painting commissions. Through every brushstroke, I breathe life into my clients’ visions, transforming their spaces into canvases of personal resonance. Whether invoking cherished memories or igniting profound emotions, I paint with a palette attuned to their preferences, capturing landscapes that resonate deeply. I warmly extend an invitation for you to embark on this artistic odyssey with me. Together, let us revel in the evolving tapestry of my creativity, sharing in the delight it brings.
