We had the good fortune of connecting with Lakesha Quarles and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lakesha, how does your business help the community?
My business SunFlower Births continues to help the community by providing support and resources to birthing persons and their families. By offering Birth and Postpartum support I am able to help ensure that another mom gets to return home with her baby and heal properly through her postpartum journey. My services also include providing resources such as doulas and lactation consultants resources. I am also an advocate for birthing rights and access to health care for birthing people. I am proud of the work I have done to help mothers and families during this time of need.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
SunFlower Births, is a holistic and alternative health service, providing Birth and Postpartum services to new and expecting families. Providing resources and items for their needs and babies’ needs. As part of my business, I also provide dads with support and preparation on how to support their wives during and after delivery. I strive to create a safe and comfortable environment for my clients, offering emotional and physical support. I also educate on postpartum and newborn care. I also offer resources on topics such as nutrition, parenting, and self-care. I also provide resources to help them find additional support and resources to help with the transition to parenthood. I provide resources to help them find childcare and other parenting support. I also provide resources to help them find local events and groups for additional support.

Although I face challenges everyday, I continue to show up and do the work that matters the most. Even on the toughest days I still persevere. I remind myself that challenges are part of life and I have to keep going. I take the time to reflect and reassess my goals to make sure that I’m on track. I also reach out to my support system for motivation and guidance.

People always ask me my why and I always say that it’s because of my passion and love for mothers that I can show up as my authentic self and provide them with the love and care that they deserve. I believe mothers are the pillars of our society and it’s our responsibility to give back to them and show them that we appreciate them. I’m passionate about making sure mothers feel supported and loved and I’m here to do that. This is why I’m dedicated to providing mothers with the resources they need to make their lives easier and more enjoyable. I want to create a space where they can come and feel safe and heard, knowing that they are valued and needed. I’m here to remind them that they are never alone.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Whenever I get a chance to hang out with friends I love to take them downtown for a nice scroll through reedy falls park, a hike at Cesars Head Mountain, or a nice brunch spot. My favorite places to eat are Halls chophouse, Ink N Ivy, or Passerelle Bistro. For some cute and good drinks, I would take them to Juniper, Reys, Vibez Ultra Lounge, or Up on The Roof. I have so many favorite spots but these are my go to places.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a shoutout to everyone in the community who has supported me through my journey as a birth worker and community advocate.
