We had the good fortune of connecting with Joselyn Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joselyn, how does your business help the community?
My first “big girl” job was working for the housing authority. It sparked my interest in social impact and the importance of businesses being a part of positive change in the community it resides. So for that reason, 10% of the net revenue generated at Eventions by Joselyn goes towards our Community Evention effort. The funds are given to a local nonprofit(s) that are doing direct service or to a community event.
Our mission is to make a positive impact on the community one event at a time. The 2023 Community Evention effort was sponsoring the Juneteenth Family Fest event.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Eventions by Joselyn is a company birthed from my desire to marry my love for social impact and event planning. Though we are based in the Lowcountry and right outside of a destination wedding city; my heart and passion is for the people. I want to produce events that aren’t just celebrations but impactful, educational and uplift the community.
That’s what makes us different. Our focus is supporting nonprofit organizations and producing community events.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well that all depends on the time of year! Ha! But all year is the best time for seafood in the Lowcountry so that would definitely be one thing we do is a seafood boil!
I would recommend staying at the Mills House hotel. Located downtown Charleston we would be walking distance to the market, waterfront and King Street food and shopping. They would have to stop by the Tiny Tassle and get one of the brightly colored handmade pieces that represent the Lowcountry and swing by the market for a fresh Sweetgrass basket.
For history & reflection, we would go over to the International African American Museum. We would do a sunset or dinner cruise experience from Patriots Point. Maybe even a private charter with Chocolate Milk Charters. We would also relax at Simply Your Spa.
The Lowcountry is filled with talented musicians and singers so we would definitely catch a live band. And if they are lucky enough to visit on the right weekend in April we would have to visit the Black Food Truck Festival for food, great music and and over all cultural experience!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many amazing women that pour into my success. But one that I would like to shout out today is one of my mentors, Djuanna Brockington.
She started as my supervisor. That merged into a friendship and when I expressed my interest in launching my business she immediately became one of the influential mentors that made sure I was connected to the right people and stayed on track.
She is still one of the people I know is on my circle and will not only hold me accountable and cheer me on but also push me to grow professionally well beyond my comfort levels.
