We had the good fortune of connecting with Jon Beaumont and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jon, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I feel like taking risks is a necessary part of a highly successful career. If you follow the path that everyone takes, you will end up in the place that most people land… the rat race. If you are perfectly content to work 40 hours every week at a job you don’t enjoy until you reach retirement age, then I would argue that you may have been brainwashed by the societal concepts of “the American Dream.”
Fortunately, I was able to learn from several successful professionals while I was in my 20’s. They taught me not to settle for the “average.” The main point I learned from them was to bet on myself. I realized that if I put 100% into my passions, things would eventually work in my favor. This has proved true over and over in my adult life.
I bought my first rental property at the age of 25 and have acquired 6 more properties since, most of which are paid off now. This was, and still is, a side job for me; as I have been absolutely positive since junior year of college that my calling was to be a mental health counselor. I mention the real estate venture mainly to state that it paved the way for me to be able to start my private practice in 2013, Beaumont Counseling Services.
Whether it be the risk of buying a rental property or starting a private practice, I take gains from them all. One of my favorite quotes is “I never lose…. I either win or I learn.” I am so happy with the way my life has turned out and I am excited about the future directions it will take; but this will only happen if I continue to take calculated risks.
What should our readers know about your business?
I absolutely love being a therapist; where just knowing that I have a chance to make a difference in the lives of those that are willing to change still makes me excited every day. As my client, you will never hear me say “I know exactly how you feel,” I will be the first to admit that I have never personally experienced many of the situations presented in sessions; therefore, I would have no way of understanding exactly how you feel about it. Even if I have been through something similar, everyone processes certain life events differently and no two are the same. So again, I do not have a magic ability to automatically see into to your intricate emotions regarding the things that have occurred in your life. However, this realization is what leads to what I believe is one of the most beneficial aspects of our therapeutic journey; teaching you to help yourself.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Honestly, we would spend most of the time hanging out by my pool. However, I would also want to take them to the following places: Wings at Peebles – a Gamecock football tailgate – Bowling – Hendrix Roof-top on Main Street.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
